Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Mansonville Chapter

SADD/Outreach 2019

SADD, originally (Students Against Driving Drunk) was created in 1981 by Wayland, Massachusetts High School hockey coach, Robert Anastas. After two members of his hockey team were killed in drunk driving accidents, he and 15 other students created the first SADD chapter and developed the Contract for Life (an agreement signed by youth and their parents to encourage either group not to drive after drinking).

The Mansonville SADD chapter started in 1987 after local youth witnessed the alcohol related deaths of friends and family members. Through Mable Hastings and her work at the CAB (then Citizen Advocacy), the program has existed since in Potton. In the early 1990’s, the Municipal Council and Community even posted signs in each of the seven entry points into Potton stating that ours, “is a SADD Community.” These signs remain posted to this day.

Though the SADD board started in Massachusetts, it has now grown into a worldwide phenomenon. With the increasing diversity of the topics facing youth, it was decided in 1997 that SADD would undergo a name change and become Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Ours in one of the few non-school affiliated chapters of SADD in Canada and the USA. We are small in size in comparison to most High schools however, we’ve accomplished a lot in our 32 years in existence. We cover topics that include: drug prevention, smoking, suicide, teen pregnancy, depression and more. Working hand in hand with local Police and groups like the CLSC, SADD is a positive program in the Community.

Our SADD’s motto is, “building leaders” and through the training offered to our youth, we are able to excel in doing just that.

The SADD National motto is: “if we can dream it, it can be done.”
